Tennis ladders in The Woodlands

The Woodlands singles ladder on Deuce Ladder is open and free to join. You pick your opponent, and the two of you agree on a court. The Woodlands Township runs 80 public tennis courts in 27 neighborhood parks. They're open until 11 p.m., and all but one park has lights. The Township's own ladder leagues are doubles: men on Tuesday nights, women on Wednesday mornings. Deuce's ladder is singles, and you set the time with your opponent.

An empty clay tennis court at dusk among very tall loblolly pines, its court lights just switched on, with a dark green fence, a white net, a garden path winding into the woods beside it and an orange sunset sky above the trees.

Ten players is enough to start a ladder. The Township says tennis is always in season here. The weather mostly agrees. From June to September, the heat decides what time of day you can play. Check the standings for The Woodlands or the ladder directory to see whether players near you have joined.

Where you would play

The Woodlands Township keeps 80 public tennis courts across 27 neighborhood parks, spread through its villages from Grogan's Mill to Creekside Park. Most parks have two courts. Bear Branch Park has 11, the most of any site. The one private club on this list is The Woodlands Country Club, which is for members.

The table lists the bigger Township sites and a sample of two-court parks, then the country club. Every row comes from the operator's own page. The Township has one fee schedule for all its courts, given under the table. "Not stated" means the operator did not give that detail on November 8, 2026.

The Woodlands Township parks

The courts are open to the public, with one condition. If you have no reservation, you give the court up to anyone with a permit and to the Township's own programs. The rest of the time is open play, first come, first served, from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

A reservation is how you make sure of a court. Peak time, in the Township's terms, is weekdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5 to 8 p.m., so a match that starts after work mostly falls in it. You book by phone through the Recreation Center at Bear Branch (281-210-3950) or the one at Rob Fleming (281-516-7348). Same-day reservations can also be made online.

Almost every park is lit. Of the 27, only Mystic Forest Park has no lights. Several sites also carry pickleball lines on the tennis courts, among them Shadowbend with 10 overlays and Falconwing with 8. The overlays come without pickleball nets. Creekwood, Falconwing and Windvale also have standalone pickleball courts.

The Woodlands Country Club

The Woodlands Country Club is a private club with a racquet facility at 100 Grand Fairway. Its outdoor courts are seven hard courts, four of them lit, and ten clay courts, seven of them lit. It also has an indoor racquet pavilion of 30,000 square feet. Play there is for members, so it only works for a Deuce match if one of you belongs. Ask the club's membership team about access.

Houston and Memorial Park

Farther south, in Houston, the Memorial Park Tennis Center sits at 1500 Memorial Loop Drive. The City of Houston manages it. The Memorial Park Conservancy describes hard courts, a practice wall and a pro shop with lockers, plus lessons, tournaments and leagues. The conservancy page mentions leagues but no ladder, and it publishes no court count, fee or booking rule. Contact the center before you plan a match there.

When you can play

You can play here all year, but the summer is long and hot. Federal climate normals for the Conroe airport, the nearest station with normals, put the average high above 90°F from June through August. The figures cover 1991 to 2020. That's about 76 days at 90°F or hotter in three months.

Winter is mild. Normal highs stay in the low to mid 60s from December through February, though it freezes on about 22 nights. Rain falls all year, and October and November are the wettest months.

Months Normal high Normal low Rain a month What it means for a match
December to February 62 to 66°F 39 to 43°F 2.9 to 4.3 in Daytime tennis; cold evenings on some nights
March and April 73 to 79°F 49 to 55°F 3.0 to 3.1 in The easiest months to schedule
May 86°F 64°F 4.8 in Heat starts; about 9 days at 90°F or hotter
June to August 91 to 95°F 70 to 72°F 3.2 to 4.4 in Early morning or after dark; lit courts help
September 90°F 66°F 3.6 in Still hot; about 18 days at 90°F or hotter
October and November 71 to 82°F 47 to 56°F 5.1 to 5.5 in Good tennis weather; the wettest months

The Township's ladder leagues show where the local limits are. They don't play when the temperature is below 40°F or above 100°F. The men's league plays at 7:30 p.m. all year, and the women's summer session starts at 8:30 a.m., half an hour earlier than in spring.

How a ladder works here

Plan a match here around the heat. From June to September, agree on an early morning or a lit court after dark, and say which when you accept. The Township's courts stay open until 11 p.m., and all but one park is lit, so a 9 p.m. start is realistic.

Decide who books before you accept. A reservation guarantees the court, and a resident pays half the non-resident rate or less, so it makes sense for the resident to book. Open play needs no booking, but you yield to permit holders, and the Township's ladder leagues take courts at parks such as Bear Branch, Alden Bridge and Sawmill on league nights. If you play on open time, have a second park in mind.

These are Deuce's defaults. An organizer can change the challenge range, both windows and the rematch cooldown; your ladder's rules show any change.

Rule Default
Challenge range Five rungs up. Rung 6 may challenge rung 1
Response window 5 days
Play window 30 days from acceptance
First challenge One unrestricted challenge inside your own level band. Always on
Rematch cooldown 14 days. Playing someone else does not shorten it
Absence Up to 21 days. You keep your rung and cannot be challenged
Inactivity Points decay every 30 days without a played match. Your rung is released at 180 days and you are withdrawn at 365

If you leave for a few weeks in August, mark a 21-day absence. You keep your rung, and nobody can challenge you while it runs. The full ruleset is on the rules page. Scoring covers how a score gets confirmed, and the glossary defines rung and level band. If an hour on a hot evening is all you have, a pro set is a fair format to agree on.

Levels and where you start

Level works two different ways here. USTA leagues, NoHo included, sort players by NTRP. To play in one you need a computer rating from past league play or a self-rating. The Township's ladder leagues use no rating at all: they don't place anyone by NTRP, and a new player starts at the bottom of the ladder.

Deuce doesn't require a rating. If you have an NTRP, a UTR or a club level, give it to us. If not, describe your game and we'll place you. Two rules decide where you land.

  1. When we are unsure, you start high. If you could be a 3.5 or a 4.0, you go in as a 4.0.
  2. Your first challenge corrects it. You get one unrestricted challenge anywhere in your level band, so one played match fixes a bad placement.

The rating conversion table lines the systems up, and the NTRP rating chart shows what each level looks like on court.

How competitive tennis is organized in The Woodlands

The Township runs its own leagues, and USTA teams around here play in the NoHo leagues. The Township's tennis page also names private leagues that play on its courts: HLTA, Jackrabbit and North Country. Each option below is described from its own pages as of November 8, 2026. If you only want singles, the last part, on where Deuce fits, is the one to read.

The Township ladder leagues

The Woodlands Township runs two doubles ladders: men on Tuesday nights at 7:30 and women on Wednesday mornings. You don't need a partner. Each week, four players share a court and play three sets, with a new partner each set. Everyone counts their own games. The top scorer on each court moves up a court for the next week, and the lowest moves down. A new player starts at the bottom.

A season is eight weeks, with two make-up dates for rain. The league rules, in their January 2024 edition, list a fee of $40 for residents and $45 for non-residents. The shorter winter session is four weeks plus one make-up date: the men's runs from November 17 to December 15, 2026, at $20 for residents and $25 for non-residents. If you can't commit to a season, the Township keeps a free substitute list. If you miss a week, finding a sub is up to you, and a no-show drops you down the ladder.

The Township calls these leagues social and recreational. Court assignments go up each Friday, and scores go to the league coordinator by email.

NoHo USTA leagues

For USTA team tennis, The Woodlands sits inside NoHo, the North of Houston local league. NoHo offers league play all year, for adults 18 and older, in communities that include Spring, Tomball, The Woodlands, Kingwood, Cypress and Conroe. Team matches are played at neighborhood courts, park courts and private clubs within about 35 miles of Lake Woodlands Drive. In the 2026 tri-level league, for example, teams registered from August 31 to September 13 and matches could start September 23, with women playing Wednesdays at 9:00 and men Saturdays at 9:00. To captain a team, you register one through NoHo's site. To play, you need a USTA membership ($44 a year for an adult) and an NTRP rating. NoHo's league details are dated November 15, 2025.

The Founders Cup and older listings

The Township also runs a doubles tournament, the Founders Cup. Its third edition was played on October 17, 2026, at Alden Bridge, Ridgewood, Sawmill and Bear Branch, and the Township plans a fourth in 2027. A Global Tennis Network listing called The Woodlands Texas Tennis Ladder ran from March 1, 2014, to March 17, 2015. Rival, which runs ladders in Dallas, Austin and San Antonio, lists no Houston or Woodlands city.

Where Deuce fits

The Township ladders are the closest thing to Deuce in The Woodlands. For doubles on a fixed night they're hard to beat. The Township sets the court and the time, and the format rotates your partners for you.

Deuce is singles, with no season to sign up for. You choose whom to challenge, and the two of you choose when and where. A challenge has a 5-day response window and a 30-day play window, so an accepted match has a deadline. Silence past five days counts as a walkover, and every player gets two free declines in 90 days.

It costs players nothing. It doesn't book courts, and it can't promise the match gets played. For team play with a captain and a lineup, a NoHo USTA team fits better. The guide to adult tennis leagues compares the formats.

Questions

Quick answers on courts, fees, leagues and the heat in The Woodlands.

Is there a tennis ladder in The Woodlands?

Yes. Deuce runs The Woodlands singles ladder, which is open-ended, has no season and is free to join. The Woodlands Township runs doubles ladder leagues: men on Tuesday nights, women on Wednesday mornings, in eight-week seasons with a shorter winter session. You don't need a partner for either.

Are public tennis courts free in The Woodlands?

The Township publishes fees only for reserving a court: $10 an hour for residents off-peak, $12 at peak times and $24 for non-residents. The rest is open play, first come, first served, and you give up the court if a permit holder or a Township program arrives. The Township's tennis staff answer email at tennis@thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov.

How do I reserve a tennis court in The Woodlands?

Call the Recreation Center at Bear Branch (281-210-3950) or Rob Fleming (281-516-7348), or reserve online on the same day. Peak hours are weekdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 5 to 8 p.m. A non-resident pays $24 an hour at any time. A Deuce challenge doesn't reserve a court, so sort out the booking with your opponent.

Which tennis courts in The Woodlands have lights?

Nearly all of them. The Township lists lights at 26 of its 27 parks, and only Mystic Forest Park has none. At The Woodlands Country Club, a private club, four of the seven outdoor hard courts and seven of the ten clay courts are lit.

When is the tennis season in The Woodlands?

All year, with the heat as the main limit. At the Conroe airport, normal highs top 90°F from June through August, about 76 days in all. Winter highs stay in the low to mid 60s. The Township ladders skip a week when it is above 100°F or below 40°F.

What rating do players in The Woodlands use?

NTRP, for USTA team tennis in the NoHo leagues, where a new player self-rates. The Township ladder leagues use no rating: a new player starts at the bottom, and results move you up. Deuce accepts an NTRP level or any other you have, and your first challenge corrects a placement that is off.

How is a ladder different from a league?

A USTA league puts you on a team, with a captain and set match days. The Township ladders give you a weekly doubles court and move you up or down by your games. A Deuce ladder gives you a rung and lets you choose whom to challenge, with deadlines that keep each challenge moving. How it works has the detail.

What does it cost to join?

Nothing. Deuce Ladder is free for players right now. You may still pay for the court if you reserve one, and the Township ladder leagues charge a season fee. A USTA membership, which a NoHo team needs, is $44 a year. Browse open ladders on Discover, or read what players get.

Can players from Spring or Houston join?

Yes. The ladder is listed for The Woodlands, but anyone who can get to a court near their opponents can join, from Spring, Conroe or north Houston. The NoHo USTA leagues draw from the same area. Pick a court that's fair to both of you.

How do I start a ladder in The Woodlands?

Apply as an organizer with ten players you can name, from a Township ladder, a USTA team, an office or a regular hitting group. Agree on which parks you will use and who books. We review the application before the ladder opens. Details are below and on the organizers page.

Start a ladder in The Woodlands

Settle the heat question before you apply. Will your group play early, late on lit courts, or both? Anyone away for a few weeks can mark a 21-day absence. A Township ladder group that wants singles on other nights is a good base. So is a NoHo team looking for match play between league dates.

You need ten players you can name. Twelve or more is better, because then you aren't drawing the same opponent week after week. We review the application before the ladder opens. Once it's approved, players can join and challenge the same day.
