Tennis ladders in Wilmington NC
The Wilmington NC singles ladder on Deuce is open, and it's free to join. You pick who you play, and the two of you pick the court. The biggest public site is the city's Althea Gibson Tennis Complex in Empie Park: 24 lit hard courts, free when you walk up, $4 an hour to book if you live in New Hanover County. The county adds nine lit courts each at Ogden Park and Veterans Park.

Ten players is enough to start a ladder. Below that we would rather tell you so than launch something that dies in three weeks.
Where you would play
Most public courts here belong to two operators. The City of Wilmington runs the big complex at Empie Park and three smaller sites. New Hanover County runs lit courts in its parks and at two high schools, plus public clay courts at Echo Farms. Two beach towns keep a few courts of their own.

"League bookings first" means league coordinators can reserve those courts, and anyone else plays them first come, first served. "Not stated" means the operator's page doesn't say, and "Not listed" means no surface is given. Only Empie Park and Echo Farms publish a surface. We checked every row against the city, county or town page on October 11, 2026.
In short: walk up at Empie Park, try Ogden or Veterans if it's full, and book Echo Farms if you want clay.
The Althea Gibson Tennis Complex at Empie Park
The complex sits inside Empie Park on Park Avenue. Its 24 hard courts are lit and open from sunrise to 11 p.m. Walk up and play for nothing, or book a court for an hour: $4 if you live in New Hanover County, $8 if you don't. To book, email the complex or call 910.341.4631.
The 1,500-square-foot clubhouse has a lounge and a snack counter. From March through November it is staffed Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with shorter hours on Fridays and weekends. The Wilmington Tennis Ladder holds its end-of-season playoff here when the courts are available, and the ILM ladder's FAQ gives Empie Park as an example of where to play.
MLK Center, Legion and Maides Park
The city has three smaller sites. The MLK Community Center at Robert Strange Park, on South 8th Street, has six lit courts. Legion Sports Complex, home of Legion Stadium on Carolina Beach Road, has four. Maides Park, home of the Davis Center on Manly Avenue, has two courts with no lights, so a match there has to finish in daylight. The city's pages give no booking system or fee for any of the three. For questions about city courts, the parks department's tennis supervisor is at 910.341.4659.
County parks and two high schools
New Hanover County Parks and Gardens has 28 lit courts across Ogden, Veterans and Long Leaf parks and Laney High School, and six more at Hoggard High School, three of them lit. Those counts come from the county's park pages, checked October 11, 2026. The pattern is the same everywhere. League coordinators can reserve some courts, and everyone else plays first come, first served. Ogden's courts 1 to 3 and Long Leaf's court 4 are walk-up only, so head there on a league night. County parks are open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. At Veterans Park, check the county's reservation calendar for tournaments before you drive out.
Clay at Echo Farms
Echo Farms Park, on Echo Farms Boulevard, is the county's clay court site. The county doesn't publish how many courts it has today, and the site doesn't work like the other parks. Every court has to be booked, at $5 an hour for county residents and $8 for everyone else. You pay when you book, online, by phone at 910-798-7730 or at the pro shop. Walk-ins get a court only if one is free. Cancel at least 24 hours ahead for a credit.
The courts close at 8 p.m. Monday to Thursday and earlier the rest of the week. Wear a shirt and tennis shoes: the county requires both.
Five more clay courts are under construction. The county started in late July 2026 and expects to finish in January 2027.
Wrightsville Beach and Kure Beach
In the Town of Wrightsville Beach, Wrightsville Beach Park on Causeway Drive has three lit tennis courts and a backwall. The lights work from a button on the post at the gate, an hour at a time, and only from sunset to 7 p.m. The town says the courts are often very busy, and court 1 belongs to the tennis pro on weekdays. In Kure Beach, Joe Eakes Park has two courts on a first come, first served basis, with pickleball lines painted over them.
When you can play
You can play in Wilmington, North Carolina, all year. Summer is hot, and late summer is wet. These are the 1991 to 2020 normals for Wilmington International Airport.
| Months | Normal high | Normal low | Normal rain a month | What it means for a match |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| December to February | 57 to 60°F | 36 to 39°F | 3.5 to 3.8 in | Highs near 60°F. Midday is the warm window |
| March to May | 67 to 81°F | 44 to 61°F | 3.1 to 4.5 in | Prime season. April is the driest month |
| June to August | 87 to 90°F | 69 to 73°F | 5.7 to 8.2 in | Play early or under lights |
| September | 84°F | 67°F | 8.7 in | The wettest month of the year |
| October and November | 67 to 76°F | 45 to 56°F | 3.6 to 4.7 in | Prime season again |
July averages about 17 days at 90°F or hotter, and August about 12. Water is the bigger problem. August and September each bring more than 8 inches of rain, more than twice what April gets. None of the operators in the court table lists a covered court. On a wet day you move the match, and the 30-day play window leaves room for that.
Both local ladders have weather rules. The ILM Tennis Ladder lets either player move a match when the forecast heat index is over 95. The Wilmington Tennis Ladder accepts two reasons to reschedule: rain, and a temperature or wind chill below 32.
How a ladder works here
Deuce's rules don't change from city to city. In Wilmington, the planning is mostly about courts and weather. Most courts are walk-up, so no booking clock is running. League bookings can fill a county park, though. On those nights, try the walk-up-only courts at Ogden and Long Leaf. Want a court you know will be free at Empie Park? Book it, and settle first who pays the $4 or $8.
Plan the summer around the heat and the storms. A start soon after sunrise at Empie Park, or a late one under its lights, beats a 2 p.m. match in July. Clay at Echo Farms needs a booking, and the courts close by 8 p.m. The challenger books the court unless you agree otherwise.
The mechanics
The table has the defaults. An organizer can change the challenge range, both windows and the rematch cooldown. The first challenge, the absence rule and the inactivity schedule are fixed.
| Rule | Default |
|---|---|
| Challenge range | Five rungs up. Rung 6 may challenge rung 1 |
| Response window | 5 days |
| Play window | 30 days from acceptance |
| First challenge | One unrestricted challenge inside your own level band. Always on |
| Rematch cooldown | 14 days. Playing someone else does not shorten it |
| Absence | Up to 21 days. You keep your rung and cannot be challenged |
| Inactivity | Points decay every 30 days without a played match. Your rung is released at 180 days and you are withdrawn at 365 |
Coming from the Wilmington Tennis Ladder? Three things will feel different. Its full ladders let you challenge seven places up or down, and Deuce only lets you challenge up, five rungs at most. It asks for two matches a month and drops you seven places if you miss. Deuce has no monthly quota, though your points start to decay after 30 days without a played match. Its season also ends on January 15, and a Deuce ladder has no season to end. The rest is on the rules page and the scoring page, and the glossary explains rung and level band.
Levels and where you start
Wilmington sorts players by NTRP. The Wilmington Tennis Ladder splits its men's singles into an A-1 ladder for 3.5 to 5.0 and an A-2 ladder for 2.5 to 3.5, and new members start at the bottom of their level. The ILM Tennis Ladder asks for your rating when you sign up. The county's round robins at Echo Farms group players by USTA level.
On Deuce a rating helps but isn't required. Give an NTRP, UTR, WTN or club level if you have one. If you've never been rated, describe your game and we'll place you. Placement follows two rules.
- A close call goes up. Torn between 3.0 and 3.5? You start at 3.5. Starting too low means easy wins for you and a skewed ladder for the players below.
- Your first match fixes it. Your first challenge can go to anyone in your level band, so a wrong placement doesn't last past one result.
The rating conversion table lines NTRP up against UTR and WTN. For what each NTRP level looks like on court, see the NTRP rating chart.
How competitive tennis is organized in Wilmington NC
Wilmington already has two local ladders and Rival Tennis Ladder, which runs ladders in 12 US cities and is not charging in Wilmington this season. USTA league tennis runs through the area association. Each is described from its own page as of October 11, 2026.
The Wilmington Tennis Ladder
is a non-profit that says it has run in the area for more than 35 years. It has men's and women's singles ladders and men's, women's and mixed doubles. The current season runs from July 20, 2026, to January 15, 2027, and you can join at any point. Membership is $25 for up to three ladders, for players 18 and over. On most ladders you arrange matches with players within seven places of you and play two a month. The top four on each ladder go to a playoff after the season.
The ILM Tennis Ladder
runs its ladders online: you challenge, post open match proposals and enter your own scores. Points come from challenging and from winning, and a loss still pays for the games you took, so playing often counts. Its membership is listed at $17, plus $10 for singles. Matches are best of three, with a 10-point tiebreak in place of a third set.
Rival Tennis Ladder
runs a Wilmington ladder in 10-week seasons. Its fall 2026 season runs from September 21 to November 29 and is free, and its standard price for singles is $35 a season. How Rival compares with Deuce sets its prices, rules and scoring side by side.
USTA league tennis
goes through the Greater Wilmington Tennis Association, which serves New Hanover, Brunswick, Pender, Columbus and Bladen counties. Its leagues are team tennis on TennisLink, including a singles league in January and February where each team match is three singles courts. The association also lists a daytime Women's Day League, inter-club doubles outside the USTA, and it points players who want a ladder to the two local ones above.
All of these run on seasons or monthly quotas. A Deuce ladder runs on deadlines instead. You challenge when you're ready. The other player then has five days to answer. Once accepted, the match has 30 days to get played. Those deadlines stop a challenge from sitting unanswered, but you and your opponent have to find the time and the court.
Deuce won't suit every player here. Its city ladder is singles, so doubles and mixed players are better served by the two local ladders. Team tennis with a captain means a USTA league. If you like a set monthly target, the Wilmington Tennis Ladder has one.
Questions
Each answer below stands on its own, for anyone who skipped straight here.
Is there a tennis ladder in Wilmington NC?
Yes, four. Deuce runs the Wilmington NC singles ladder, open-ended and free to join. The Wilmington Tennis Ladder, a local non-profit, runs singles and doubles ladders from July to January for $25, and you can join mid-season. The ILM Tennis Ladder runs its ladders online, and Rival Tennis Ladder runs 10-week seasons.
Are tennis courts free in Wilmington NC?
Mostly. Walk-up play at the 24 courts of the Althea Gibson Tennis Complex is free, and the county's pages list no fee for their first come, first served courts at Ogden, Veterans and Long Leaf parks. You pay to reserve: $4 an hour at Empie Park for county residents. Clay at Echo Farms is always booked and paid.
How do I reserve a tennis court in Wilmington NC?
At the Althea Gibson Tennis Complex, email the complex or call 910.341.4631. An hour costs $4 for New Hanover County residents and $8 for others. Echo Farms clay courts are booked online, by phone at 910-798-7730 or at the pro shop. At the other county parks, only league coordinators can book.
Which Wilmington NC tennis courts have lights?
The Althea Gibson Tennis Complex is lit and open until 11 p.m. The city's courts at the MLK Community Center and Legion Sports Complex are lit. So are the county's courts at Ogden, Veterans and Long Leaf parks and Laney High School, until 10 p.m., and three of Hoggard's six. Maides Park has no lights.
Can you play tennis in Wilmington NC in the summer?
Yes, early or late. Normal highs reach 87 to 90°F from June to August, and July averages about 17 days at 90°F or more. Rain is the bigger issue: August and September are the wettest months. The local ladders let you reschedule for rain, and a Deuce play window is 30 days.
Is there clay court tennis in Wilmington NC?
Yes. New Hanover County's Echo Farms Park, on Echo Farms Boulevard, has public clay courts. You must book, at $5 an hour for county residents and $8 for everyone else. Five more clay courts are under construction there, with the county expecting to finish in January 2027.
What rating do Wilmington NC players use?
NTRP. The Wilmington Tennis Ladder sorts men's singles into NTRP bands, the ILM ladder asks for your rating at sign-up, and USTA leagues are by NTRP level. Deuce will take NTRP, UTR, WTN or a club level, but you can join without one. Your first challenge corrects a placement that's off.
How is a ladder different from a league?
A USTA league puts you on a team with a captain and a match schedule; Wilmington's USTA singles league plays in January and February. A ladder gives you a rung, and you decide who to challenge and when to play, inside a response window and a play window. How it works has the full picture.
What does it cost to join?
Nothing. Deuce Ladder is free for players right now. You still pay for a court where one charges: a reserved hour at Empie Park is $4 for county residents. The Wilmington Tennis Ladder costs $25 a season, ILM lists a membership from $17, and Rival's fall season is free. Browse open ladders on Discover, or see what players get.
How do I start a ladder in Wilmington NC?
Apply as an organizer. You need ten players you can name, and a group that already plays together is the easiest place to find them. Every application is reviewed before the ladder opens. The steps are below and on the organizers page.
Start a ladder in Wilmington NC
The city ladder is for singles players from anywhere in Wilmington. A smaller ladder suits a group that already shares something: the regulars at Empie Park, the clay players at Echo Farms, a USTA team that wants singles between seasons, a neighborhood with its own courts, or a group of coworkers.
The application is ten questions and takes about five minutes. Someone at Deuce reads each one and writes back if anything is unclear. Once approved, the ladder is live, and players can join and challenge that day.
You need ten players you can name. Twelve or more is better, because a small group keeps drawing the same opponents. With fewer than ten, apply anyway, and we'll say so if the group is too thin to work.
Nothing imports from a spreadsheet or another ladder site. Invite your players once the ladder is approved, and let each one's unrestricted first challenge sort out the order.
