Tennis ladders in Westchester

The Westchester singles ladder on Deuce is open, and it's free to join. You pick who you play, and the two of you settle the court. In Westchester the court usually comes down to a permit. Most town courts are for residents only: Scarsdale's 26 courts need a $170 adult permit. White Plains is the exception at Gillie Park, where ten lit Har-Tru courts take non-residents for a $325 season pass.

An empty clay court in a Westchester park in autumn, oaks and maples turning amber and red, an old fieldstone wall along one side and a wooden bench by the gate in fallen leaves.

Ten players is enough to start a ladder. Below that we would rather tell you so than launch something that dies in three weeks.

Where you would play

The county parks department runs one set of public tennis courts, at Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers, and points everyone else to their own town's recreation department. Each city, town and village writes its own rules, and every one on this page starts with where you live. The table lists the courts we could confirm on each operator's own page.

"Not stated" means the operator's page doesn't say. Har-Tru is a clay surface; "all-weather" and "omni" are the operators' own words. Fees are 2026 prices for one adult. We checked every row against the operator's page or 2026 brochure on October 17, 2026.

Read the "Who can play" column first. A Scarsdale permit gets you nothing in New Rochelle, or the other way around. On a county-wide ladder, two sites are open to the widest pool: Gillie Park, which sells a non-resident pass, and Tibbetts Brook, open to any county resident with a Park Pass. The sections below take the operators one at a time, starting with the county.

The county courts at Tibbetts Brook

Tibbetts Brook Park, on Midland Avenue in Yonkers, has the county's six all-weather courts. The park is open every day of the year from 8 a.m. to dusk. You need proof that you live in Westchester: a county Park Pass, or a New York State driver's license with a Westchester address.

The Park Pass costs $100 for an adult and lasts three years. Seniors 60 and over can pay $17 for one year instead. The county issues it in person only, at its park pass offices, with proof of residency.

Yonkers players have the city's own parks too. The City of Yonkers counts 23 tennis courts, but its pages give no court-by-court list and no fees, so the table has no City of Yonkers row.

White Plains: Gillie Park

Gillie Park sits at Mamaroneck Avenue and Gedney Way, and its ten Har-Tru courts all have lights. The city sells a season pass: $150 for an adult resident, $130 for a senior, $90 for a youth and $325 for anyone who lives outside White Plains. Guest coupons cost $65 for five plays.

The 2026 season runs from May 4 to October 25. Courts open at 8 a.m. on weekdays (9:30 a.m. on Mondays) and close at 9 p.m., and at 6 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Call 914-422-5127 to reserve a court or to check whether rain has closed them.

Greenburgh's town courts

The Town of Greenburgh runs 26 tennis courts for residents of its unincorporated area. Residents need the town's photo ID, the UniCard, on every court. The big site is Anthony F. Veteran Park, with 17 lit tennis courts, and it is for unincorporated residents only.

A $115 adult membership covers tennis, platform tennis and pickleball at Veteran Park and East Rumbrook Park. Without one, a resident pays $7 a day at Veteran Park, and a guest pays $8 on weekdays or $10 on weekends. Court hours change with the season, so call 914-989-1830 first.

Greenburgh also sells non-residents a permit for its courts other than Veteran Park. The town's page lists no price for it.

Scarsdale's village courts

Scarsdale keeps 26 courts at four sites, all for village residents. A permit runs from April 1 to October 31 and costs $170 for an adult, $85 for a senior 65 or over and $102 for a junior. You book every court online, a booking lasts one hour, and the court is released if you are ten minutes late. Check in with the court attendant before you play.

A non-resident has to come as a resident's guest. That costs $20 an hour, and on weekends it's allowed from noon to 4 p.m. The High School courts on Wayside Lane are the lit ones, until about 10 p.m. in season.

New Rochelle's Pinebrook Tennis Center

New Rochelle's public courts are at the Pinebrook Tennis Center, on Pinebrook Boulevard at Albert Leonard Road. You need the city's Tennis Card, which only residents can buy: $100 a year for an adult, $65 for a senior 60 or over. Courts are first come, first served from sunrise to sunset, and the center closes from December 1 to March 1.

Memorial Park, Town of Mamaroneck

Memorial Park, on Myrtle Boulevard in Larchmont, has the Town of Mamaroneck's four courts. They're open April 1 to October 31 from 9 a.m. to dusk. An adult membership is $165 for a town resident and $205 for a resident of the villages of Larchmont and Mamaroneck. Members book by phone at 914-834-7074, up to a week ahead, and get an hour a day. Residents without a membership can walk on for $15, for one hour, but they can't book.

Winter and indoor tennis

The town courts in White Plains, Scarsdale and Mamaroneck close by the end of October, and Pinebrook follows on December 1. Scarsdale runs its winter adult lessons indoors, at SPORTIME Lake Isle in Eastchester. The table lists no indoor club, because we found none that publishes terms for a casual booking. If your winter has no court in it, the absence rule further down keeps your rung.

When you can play

The calendar here is set by the towns more than the weather. Scarsdale and Mamaroneck open their courts from April 1 to October 31, and Gillie Park's 2026 season runs from May 4 to October 25. The county's courts at Tibbetts Brook stay open all year, from 8 a.m. to dusk. The weather figures below are NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Westchester County Airport.

Months Normal high Normal low Days at 90°F or more What it means for a match
December to February 37 to 42°F 22 to 28°F None Indoor courts, or Tibbetts on a mild day
March to May 48 to 69°F 31 to 50°F Under 1 in all Town courts open on April 1
June to August 78 to 83°F 59 to 65°F About 9 in all Book a lit court for an evening match
September to November 52 to 74°F 36 to 57°F Under 1 in all Prime until the courts close October 31

Heat is rarely the problem. Even July averages fewer than five days at 90°F or more. Rain comes all year, from 2.5 inches in February to 4.9 in September. If rain closes Gillie Park, the city says so on 914-422-5127. On a ladder, a rained-out match moves to another day inside the 30-day play window.

How a ladder works here

The ladder runs on the same rules everywhere. What Westchester adds is the permit question, so settle it before you send a challenge. Work out which courts both of you can use. A Scarsdale resident can bring a non-resident as a guest for $20 an hour, though on weekends only from noon to 4 p.m. Anyone can buy a Gillie Park pass, and Tibbetts Brook takes any two county residents. The challenger books the court unless you agree otherwise.

Then size the match to the court. Scarsdale asks you to play one hour per booking, and so does Memorial Park. A one-hour slot is not best of three. Deuce records six formats, among them an eight-game pro set, one set with a tiebreak at 6-6, short sets to four and FAST4. Pick one that fits the slot before you walk on. The Westchester ladder accepts all six.

The mechanics

The table has the defaults. An organizer can change the challenge range, both windows and the rematch cooldown. The first challenge, the absence rule and the inactivity schedule are fixed.

Rule Default
Challenge range Five rungs up. Rung 6 may challenge rung 1
Response window 5 days
Play window 30 days from acceptance
First challenge One unrestricted challenge inside your own level band. Always on
Rematch cooldown 14 days. Playing someone else does not shorten it
Absence Up to 21 days. You keep your rung and cannot be challenged
Inactivity Points decay every 30 days without a played match. Your rung is released at 180 days and you are withdrawn at 365

Winter matters on this ladder. Points decay after 30 days without a played match, and the Scarsdale and Memorial Park courts close on October 31. If you have no indoor court, take an absence: it stops challenges reaching you and pauses the decay. A standard absence lasts up to 21 days and you can take as many as you need. An extended absence lasts up to six months, needs a written reason and goes to your organizer. The rules page and the scoring page have the detail, and the glossary explains rung and level band.

Levels and where you start

Local leagues and ladders sort players by NTRP. USTA Eastern builds its leagues on NTRP level and age, and a player new to the USTA starts with a self-rating. Westchester Tennis Ladders uses the same scale: its advanced singles ladder is for players rated 4.0 to 5.0 and up, its intermediate ladder for 3.0 to low 4.0.

On Deuce a rating helps but isn't required. Give an NTRP, UTR, WTN or club level if you have one. If you've never been rated, describe your game and we'll place you. Placement follows two rules.

  1. A close call goes up. Torn between 3.5 and 4.0? You start at 4.0. Starting too low means easy wins for you and a skewed ladder for the players below.
  2. Your first match fixes it. Your first challenge can go to anyone in your level band, so a wrong placement doesn't last past one result.

The rating conversion table lines NTRP up against UTR and WTN. For what each NTRP level looks like on court, see the NTRP rating chart.

How competitive tennis is organized in Westchester

League tennis here runs through USTA Eastern. Westchester also has a seasonal ladder that dates from 2020 and a flex league run by the Tennis League Network. We describe each from its own page as of October 17, 2026.

USTA leagues through USTA Eastern

Westchester sits in USTA Eastern's Southern region, with Rockland, the Mid-Hudson counties and Greenwich, Connecticut. Two adult league coordinators, Becky Bellino and Kate Jennings, cover Westchester and Rockland. Teams play by NTRP level and age group, with mixed doubles and tri-level doubles on top. USTA Eastern's league page lists both coordinators' phone numbers, and it also names Westchester and Rockland for its USTA Flex app.

Westchester Tennis Ladders

, founded in 2020, runs a summer season of singles ladders (advanced, intermediate and women's) and a women's doubles ladder. Its 2026 summer season ran from May 6 to August 25. Singles cost $70 if paid by May 5 and $80 after. A challenged player has 48 hours to answer. Its own history mentions a fall and winter ladder for indoor play by 2025.

The Westchester Tennis League

is the Tennis League Network's flex league for the county. You join a division, then arrange your own matches and courts with the players in it, and the season ends in playoffs. Its next season runs from April 6 to June 6, 2027: $32.95 if you sign up through February, $39.95 at full price.

Rival Tennis Ladder

runs a New York ladder, but its page lists the five boroughs and not Westchester. How Rival compares with Deuce covers the differences.

The local ladder and the flex league both run on seasons, while a Deuce ladder just keeps going. You challenge when you're ready, the other player gets five days to answer, and an accepted match has 30 days to get played. Finding a court you can both use is still up to the two of you.

Deuce isn't the right fit for every player here. The county ladder is singles only. Doubles players have Westchester Tennis Ladders' women's doubles ladder and USTA Eastern's mixed and tri-level leagues. A USTA league also gives you a team and a captain, which a ladder doesn't. The flex league ends each season with playoffs.

Questions

Quick answers, checked against the sources on October 17, 2026. Skip to the one you need.

Is there a tennis ladder in Westchester?

Yes. Deuce runs the Westchester singles ladder, open-ended and free to join. Westchester Tennis Ladders runs seasonal singles and women's doubles ladders, $70 to $80 for singles in 2026. The Westchester Tennis League is a flex league rather than a ladder, with its next season starting April 6, 2027.

Are tennis courts free in Westchester?

Not the ones on this page. Each needs a permit or a pass. Scarsdale's adult permit is $170, Gillie Park's resident pass is $150, New Rochelle's Tennis Card is $100 and Greenburgh's membership is $115. The county courts at Tibbetts Brook need a $100 Park Pass, which lasts three years.

Can I play outside my own town?

Sometimes. White Plains sells non-residents a $325 season pass at Gillie Park, and Greenburgh sells a non-resident permit for its courts other than Veteran Park. In Scarsdale you play only as a resident's guest, for $20 an hour. New Rochelle and the Town of Mamaroneck sell to residents only.

How do I reserve a tennis court in Westchester?

It depends on the town. Scarsdale takes every booking online for one hour. At Gillie Park, call 914-422-5127. Memorial Park members call 914-834-7074, up to seven days ahead. Pinebrook in New Rochelle is first come, first served, and the county page describes no booking at Tibbetts Brook.

Which Westchester courts have lights?

In White Plains, all ten at Gillie Park. In Greenburgh, the 17 at Anthony F. Veteran Park plus East Rumbrook and Yosemite. In Scarsdale, the High School courts, until about 10 p.m. in season. The other operators' pages don't mention lights, and Pinebrook in New Rochelle closes at sunset.

When does the outdoor season end?

Scarsdale's and the Town of Mamaroneck's courts close on October 31, and Gillie Park closes on October 25 in 2026. Pinebrook in New Rochelle shuts from December 1 to March 1. The county's Tibbetts Brook courts stay open year-round, 8 a.m. to dusk. Westchester Tennis Ladders has run a winter ladder for indoor play.

What rating do Westchester players use?

NTRP. USTA Eastern organizes its leagues by NTRP and age, and new players rate themselves. Westchester Tennis Ladders sorts its ladders by USTA rating too. Deuce will take NTRP, UTR, WTN or a club level, but you can join without one. Your first challenge corrects a placement that's off.

How is a ladder different from a league?

A USTA league puts you on a team with a captain and a schedule, and a flex league drops you into a division for one season. On a ladder you hold a rung and decide who to challenge and when, inside a response window and a play window. How it works has the full picture.

Can I play in New York City too?

Yes. You can join more than one ladder, and each keeps its own standings. City courts need a New York City Parks permit, and the season runs from the first Saturday in April to the Sunday before Thanksgiving. The New York City page explains the permit and the short match formats that fit a one-hour slot.

What does it cost to join?

Nothing. Deuce Ladder is free for players right now. Court access is the cost: from $100 a year for a New Rochelle Tennis Card to $325 for a non-resident Gillie Park pass, or $100 for a three-year county Park Pass. Browse Discover, or see what players get.

How do I start a ladder in Westchester?

Apply as an organizer. You need ten players you can name, and a group that already shares courts is the easiest place to find them. Every application is reviewed before the ladder opens. The steps are below and on the organizers page.

Start a ladder in Westchester

The county ladder is for singles players from anywhere in Westchester. A smaller ladder often works better here, because a town ladder settles the permit question at the start. A ladder of Scarsdale permit holders can use every village court. The same goes for a group of Greenburgh cardholders, Gillie Park pass holders, or a club's members.

The application is ten questions and takes about five minutes. Someone at Deuce reads each one and writes back if anything is unclear. Once approved, the ladder is live, and players can join and challenge that day.

You need ten players you can name. Twelve or more is better, because a small group keeps drawing the same opponents. With fewer than ten, apply anyway, and we'll say so if the group is too thin to work.

Nothing imports from a spreadsheet or another ladder site. Invite your players once the ladder is approved, and let each one's unrestricted first challenge sort out the order.
