What happens when one half of a pair drops out?

Decide before the season, not during it. The workable rule is that the pair holds its rung for a fixed window while it finds a replacement, the replacement is approved against the band's level, and the pair keeps its record. The alternative, dissolving the pair and releasing the rung, is cleaner to administer and much less popular with the player who is left.
