How do you set level bands for a ladder?

Look at the actual spread of your group, not at a rating scale. If your twenty players run from a recreational 3.0 to a strong 4.5, two bands is right. If they are all within half a level, one band is right and splitting them just halves everybody's opponent pool. A band needs eight to ten players to function. Two thin bands are worse than one broad one.
