How long is a season?

Six, eight, ten or twelve weeks, with the dates published on every ladder page. Twelve weeks is the maximum. Seasons exist so the standings mean something at the end. A ladder can also run open-ended, with no end date, no close and no playoff, and the ladder page tells you which one you are joining. Seasons and playoffs.
